Application Status

It may take up to 60 days to process a properly completed application that is signed, dated, and has all required attachments. It may take longer than 60 days to process your application if:

  • You have lived or worked outside North Dakota and we need to verify information with another state;
  • We sent the application back to you because information or documents were missing. The processing time does not begin until after we receive the properly completed application with all documents.

We do not acknowledge receipt of applications. Please do not call or email with inquiries. The BCI is prohibited by law from providing information about the status of a concealed weapon license application to anyone, even the applicant. Instead, follow the instructions below for making a written status inquiry if it has been over 60 days since the completed application has been submitted.

If the application is approved, you will receive a license in the mail. The license is valid for five years. If your application is denied, you will receive a letter explaining the reason for the denial.

Written Inquiries – More than 60 days since application submitted

We appreciate your patience. If it has been more than 60 days since a satisfactorily completed application was submitted to the BCI and you have not received the license or a denial letter, you may send a letter to the BCI. Your letter must include your full name, date of birth and current mailing address. Mail it to:

BCI – CWL Over 60 days
PO Box 1054
Bismarck ND 58502

When we receive the letter, we review the request. If the license was issued, we will assume it has been lost in the mail and will re-issue the license to the address listed on your application or the most current address that you have reported to us. Otherwise, we may contact you to obtain additional documents or to clarify information on your application.
