Law Enforcement Staffing Grant Program

The 68th Legislative Assembly approved an appropriation of $29,000 to the Office of Attorney General to provide grants to any local police department located in a community that has recently experienced a significant increase in the number of registered sex offenders living in that community. Funding provided may be used for salaries and overtime, training, and purchases of equipment for existing and newly hired law enforcement staff.

Eligible Program Participants

 

Grant funds can only be disbursed through a political subdivision. This grant program is only available to Cities.

 

  • Grants are to be awarded to any local police department located in a community that has recently experienced a significant increase in the number of registered sex offenders living in that community.

 

 

Eligible Uses

 

Law Enforcement Staffing grant funds may be used for the following purpose areas:

 

  • Salaries and overtime
  • Training and related travel expenses
  • Equipment purchases

 

 

Prohibited Uses

 

Grant funds cannot be used to supplant state and local funds. Grant funds can only increase the amount of such funds that would, in the absence of grant aid, be made available for the same activities.   In addition, grant funds cannot be used for:

 

  • Lobbying
  • Research/research projects
  • Fundraising
  • Construction/remodel projects
  • Providing out of state direct services or training

 

 

Length of Award

 

The grant award period will be April 1, 2024 through March 31, 2025. A one-time extension for 2 months will be allowed and must be requested in writing.  Continued funding cannot be guaranteed, this is a one-time funded grant.  Applicants should secure local funding so that projects may be continued after the grant ends.

Applications submitted or postmarked after the due date will be returned and not considered. Late submissions will not be accepted.

 

 

Application/Award Timeline

 

  • March 1, 2024:  Notice of funding availability is made.
  • March 15, 2024:  Application deadline.
  • April 1, 2024: Award notices will be sent out.
  • March 31, 2025: Funding award ends.

 

 

Grant Awards

 

Quarterly financial reporting and quarterly progress reports are required and must be accompanied by complete documentation. Reimbursement may be withheld if reporting is not complete.
