Request: May a city be approved for a new or reestablished Renaissance Zone after a prior Renaissance Zone in that city has expired?
Conclusion: A city must apply to the Department of Commerce for approval for designation of a Renaissance Zone. The initial duration of the Renaissance Zone cannot exceed 15 years, but the city can apply to have renaissance zone status extended in increments of up to five years. A city may not propose or be a part of more than one renaissance zone. If a city does not apply for an extension, the zone will expire. There is no mechanism to renew an expired zone status. A new or reestablished Renaissance Zone may not be approved after a prior Renaissance zone in that city has expired.
